The History of Saltaire

ABOUT SALTAIRE MILLS

Salts Mill was started in 1851 and was completed in 1853. The mill had 1200 looms and 3000 workers, and at that time it was the largest mill in the world., producing 30,000 yards of cloth every single day. It was built to resemble a palazzo of the Italian Renaissance, which Sir Titus believed was a time when social and cultural advancement were directly linked to the commercial ability of the textile barons.

History of Saltaire

SIR TITUS SALT

Sir Titus Salt was, in today's terms, a billionaire. He used his vast weath to build what is now the world heritage site of Salts of Saltaire. Following his religious leanings, he was the first to build a town for his workforce, granting them access to housing far beyond the common man in this time. He built schools to educate the young, a hospital to maintain the health for his worker's families, a concert hall for entertainment and a gymnasium. His workers were obliged to attend religious ceremonies in the majestic family chapel, and as a Quaker, he forbid the sale of alcohol on site.

His legacy is to be found in the prosperous Salts mill itself and the local area, which remains one of the jewels in Yorkshire's crown.

Our choice of fabrics, from manufacturing processes to patterns, all honour this astounding visonary. The heritage of this area is woven into every fabric we produce, and we are proud to be custodians of this legacy brand, from the generations now passed and onward for those who follow.
